My name is Oluwasegun Ojo, but most people call me Segun. I was born and bred in Akure, a city located in the south-western part of Nigeria. By causuality rather than choice, I ended up studying Statistics at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, and I fell in love with stats. I later got a scholarship from the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) in Cameroon, where I completed my masters in mathematical science in 2016.
I relocated to Spain for my doctoral research in 2018, under the supervision of Antonio Fernandez Anta at the IMDEA Networks Institute, Madrid and the Unviversidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M). My doctoral research was mostly focused on scalable outlier detection techniques for big data streams. You can see some of my published researched in the research section. You may also want to check out my Google scholar profile if that's your thing.
After defending my thesis in 2022, I continued on to a postdoct at the UC3M-Santander Big Data Institute, Madrid (a rsearch institute of UC3M). While there I got to work on interesting data science problems with applications in finance, market intelligence and retail for big spanish corporations like Santander Bank, El Corte Ingles; and various other government agencies.
I am currently a machine learning engineer at Grupo Ruiz, where I work on interesting data science problems in mobility and interurban transport. I also explore and research on ML and AI applications in the interurban transport sector and I often build prototypes of my research and deploy them.
What I Do
Currently, my focus is on:
- Statistical Modeling: I build models to help with planning and prediction of mobility demand in Spain.
- ML Engineering: Designing and deploying scalable machine learning pipelines and real-time inference systems.
- R&D: Research and Development of new ML, CV, and AI prototypes in the public transport sector.
- Software Development: I love building software, whether at work or for personal projects. I currently write Python and Rust. I've also written a considerable amount of R and Dart code in the past.
Interests
I'm interested in problems at the intersection of statistics, machine learning, and software engineering (e.g., building productionML systems). I enjoy finding interesting new applications for data science and machine learning, and using data and technology to solve complex problems.
Reading & Learning
I feel alive everything I learn something new, so I spend a significant amount of my time reading technical literature and academic papers. You can find my latest book notes and research reflections right here on this blog.
I created this space to share my technical findings, track my reading journey, and contribute to the broader statistics and engineering community.
